August is a busy month at School on Wheels. Not only are we prepping our students to go back to school and placing volunteers for tutoring, but we also have four huge ways for the community to get involved and support the kids we serve in Indianapolis this month! Want to help? Read on to learn more.
Apply to Volunteer
Summer is over and school’s in session! We’ve been buying uniforms, filling backpacks, and delivering school supplies to all our students, but there’s more we need to do – especially this year. We’ve expanded into a new tutoring location and have introduced new tutoring hours. Because of this we can serve more kids, but we can’t do that without more tutors.
We’re still placing volunteers on all days, locations, and sites, but we need the most help at the following locations, especially on Wednesdays:
Cold Spring School
3650 Cold Spring Rd.
Indianapolis, IN 46222
Monday and Wednesday 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm.
STAR (Striving Toward Academic Readiness) Program
Indianapolis Public School #54
3150 E. 10th St.
Indianapolis, IN 46201
Wednesday 8:45 am – 9:45 am (1st grade) and 10:45 am – 11:45 am (kindergarten)
Donate to our Back to School Campaign
Students across Indianapolis are back in school, and that means families of children experiencing homelessness are working extra hard to keep up with their children’s needs. Research shows, especially for children from families in poverty, that achievement in school is strongly linked to the family’s involvement in the child’s learning process. The Harvard Family Research Project makes the case that family involvement can predict both a child’s academic achievement and social development.
We work with hundreds of parents each year – parents just like Sharon, a mother who found her family homeless after fleeing an abusive relationship – to help them navigate the education system and help their children achieve academic success. With your help, we’ll be able to impact even more parents this year.
Purchase an Item off our Wishlist
So far this school year, we’ve distributed over 70 backpacks full of school supplies, and tutoring hasn’t even kicked off yet! We could use your help restocking our supplies and helping prepare for the start of tutoring in just 10 days. Our most needed items include:
Nut-free individually-packaged snacks including fruit snacks, Nutrigrain Bars, Goldfish, and Cheez-its
We happily accept donations at our office, or you can check out our Amazon Wishlist.
Change your watch battery at Reis-Nichols
Did you know that whenever you take your watch to Reis-Nichols for a battery exchange they simply request a small donation to their charity of the month? During August, Reis-Nichols Jewelers is generously donating 100% of their watch battery exchange donations to support the students we serve. Now is the perfect time to change your watch batteries!
Thanks for exploring ways to support School on Wheels and the families we serve. With your help, we can break the cycle of homelessness through education.
