We did it!

School on Wheels is proud to announce it is the winner of the second annual Gerry Rauenhorst Building Community Award and will receive a $63,000 grant from the Opus Foundation®.

School on Wheels was nominated by local Opus Group employees and was one of eight national finalists for this award. Over 28,000 votes were cast from around the world for finalists in this competition, and School on Wheels garnered the most votes during a 10-day voting period this April.

Of this national award during School on Wheels’ 15th year anniversary, School on Wheels Founder & CEO Sally Bindley says, “We are humbled by the support from our city, our state, across the nation, and around the globe. We are grateful to Opus Foundation for the opportunity to engage thousands of caring individuals in our work. From Mayor Hogsett and Senator Coats to our volunteers and neighbors who helped us win, we are eternally grateful. We won the contest today but the real winners are the kids who will benefit from the grant award and awareness generated from this campaign.”

Founded in 2001, School on Wheels provides one-on-one tutoring and educational advocacy for school-aged children and their families who are experiencing homelessness. The organization’s programs work together to create a web of support for the homeless children and families in Indianapolis, connecting teachers, schools and service partners to meet the academic needs of those children who need it most. Over 400 community volunteers contribute nearly 8,000 hours of tutoring each school year to help children experiencing homelessness across Indianapolis achieve academic success and break the cycle of homelessness through education.

Upcoming ways for Indianapolis residents to support School on Wheels include the 2016 School on Wheels Education Celebration on April 28 at Crane Bay Event Center, Prime Car Wash’s Greenwood Grand Opening on April 30 with all donations benefitting School on Wheels, and RUN(317) for School on Wheels on June 16.

School on Wheels believes that all children, regardless of socio-economic status or housing situation, deserve a proper learning environment and educational support. By providing volunteer tutors, academic interventions, parent support, school supplies and uniforms to homeless children throughout the city of Indianapolis, we inspire learning, empower kids and ultimately end homelessness.
