School on Wheels works with 13 Indianapolis shelter sites and schools to ensure the kids we serve have access to a safe and quite place to learn. We are proud that our tutoring program has such strong support from our partners and that we operate in a community so dedicated to building strong relationships to ensure the best outcome for all children experiencing homelessness in Indianapolis. Thanks to partner Crystal Haslett, the Washington Township McKinney-Vento Liaison, who recently lent us her voice so that people could better understand the impact of homelessness on education and how partnering with School on Wheels has benefitted her students:
Back to school excitement can quickly turn to anxiety for students who don’t have all the necessary resources. Even if a student finds access to a uniform and school supplies, frequent moves can set back academic progress and prevent strong relationships with teachers and classmates from forming. And these are just a few of the many barriers faced by students impacted by homelessness in our city right now. As an educator, this is why I work with School on Wheels through programs at Greenbriar and Fox Hill Elementary schools to impact the academic success of the students I work to help each day.
2014/2015 Greenbriar and Fox Hill Elementary Student Successes
92% of our students that participated in tutoring received an A- or higher in at least one core subject area.
100% maintained a B- or improved in one core subject at some point during the school year.
With over 5,200 children in Marion County experiencing homelessness this year, School on Wheels fills a critical need in Indianapolis by connecting schools, service providers and families to create a web of support that helps the most vulnerable children in our city succeed academically.
Thanks to our partners and our supporters for helping School on Wheels be such a significant part of the solution in helping children experiencing homelessness overcome obstacles to education. As children in Indianapolis go back to school, join us in ensuring they all can achieve success.
