It’s no secret that at School on Wheels, we are big fans of kids helping kids. We have some pretty amazing volunteers and supporters of all ages, but not many of them have can say they’ve been involved with us for their whole life.
Robbie Blackwell is that exception. Beginning with his very first birthday in 2009, he and his family have donated his birthday to School on Wheels each year. Every year brings a new theme for the party (this year it was Legos!) but what doesn’t change is his commitment to helping others. The invitations that are sent to his guests encourage them not to bring gifts for Robbie, but to bring material and financial donations to support the homeless children we serve at School on Wheels. Through his efforts, he has collected hundreds of backpacks, uniforms, school supplies, educational materials and generous cash donations. At just 7 years of age, Robbie has already made a significant impact in his community.
That impact is what caught the attention of Kim Borges, Vice President and Area Marketing Manager for Regions. She came across Robbie’s story on our website. She told us that, “Robbie’s commitment to supporting School On Wheels aligns perfectly with our mission at Regions to Make Life Better for the communities we serve. Our associates have been so inspired by his philanthropic spirit and moved by his generosity and compassion. Robbie’s collection results benefitting SOW students illustrate that each one of us has the ability to make a positive impact. We are proud to support his efforts.” We couldn’t agree more and have loved watching Regions and Robbie connect. Their staff made cards for Robbie for his birthday and have made several donations in his honor.
We are proud of what Robbie has been able to accomplish and are excited about the example this sets for other children and individuals in our community. His generosity is inspiration for us all as we work together as a community to support our city’s most vulnerable children.
