Each month, we’ll be introducing you to a new School on Wheels staff member so you can learn more about the people who make our programs run successfully! This month, we’ll highlight Laura Long, newest member of our School on Wheels family! She was a tutor and office volunteer for over a year before she joined our team – read on to learn more!
What is your role at School on Wheels?
I am the Project Manager. This entails working closely with the Director of Development and the Vice President of Programs & Community Outreach on their various and multiple projects. In addition, I manage the office including working with vendors and contractors.
What did you do before you came here?
I have been in sales, sales management, and marketing for many, many years! I did leave the sales career path for a moment and was the Director of Development at a local non-profit for a few years.
Why did you decide to join the School on Wheels team?
Because a position finally opened up! I was recently laid off a year and a half ago so all of a sudden I had some free time. I used a lot of that newly found free time volunteering as a tutor and helping in the School on Wheels office. In that time period, I have found so much joy in tutoring (I can’t believe I was actually once nervous!) and became a big fan of this organization. It was no secret that I wanted to become part of the School on Wheels family so I was thrilled I had the opportunity to interview for and then be offered the Project Manager position!
What’s your favorite thing about your job?
Feeling needed! I have a great job where I assist in making our programs and projects successful. Also, I love to multi-task which is key to being a Project Manager.
Can you share one of your favorite tutoring stories?
Mine is not really a story. My favorite thing is seeing the smile on my student’s face when I see her every week. Nothing makes me happier than spending time with her on Wednesdays.
What’s one thing that people would be surprised to know about you?
I may love Downton Abbey but I also love all the Real Housewives shows…I love documentaries and NPR but I also like Tommy Boy type movies and sports radio stations!
