Anton, age 10, has been in our program since the beginning of the 2016/2017 school year and is a true success story. He attends tutoring regularly and recently received notification that he had made honor roll for the third semester!

Anton started third grade this year in a new school and was apprehensive about his new teachers and about being tutored after school. His GPA was 2.4 at the end of the first quarter, and with the support of School on Wheels and his dedicated tutors, he has begun to embrace learning. He’s excited about education, his behavior in class as well as attendance has improved, and his grades are something he is very proud of.  He increased his Language Arts grade from D+ in the first quarter to a B- this quarter. His D in Art is now a B. Overall his GPA jumped to 3.23, which is nearly a full point – and the school year isn’t yet over.

We are truly proud Anton’s accomplishments and thankful to the amazing School on Wheels tutors and staff who helped make his successes possible. Anton’s mom is very proud of his accomplishments too. Of Anton’s and his little brother’s education, Anton’s mom says, “I want them to be successful. I want them to look more into the bigger side of the world. There is more to life than just the streets and a lot of kids only see the street side of life. But education is so much more. And once the tutors here help you be creative with your school work — once a lot of more kids get to experience that, I think that it could change things. I think education can be a big step towards changing our world and our kids’ future.”

Anton is just one of the hundreds of children we serve each year. $1,000 underwrites his tutoring for a full school year, ensuring him access to curriculum developed for his educational needs, one-on-one tutoring support three times each week, and school uniforms and supplies so he always has what he needs to be successful in the classroom. His progress demonstrates just how much impact $1,000 has on beginning to break the cycle of homelessness through education.
