Even though it doesn’t feel like winter outside, the holiday season is just around the corner! And to celebrate, our families at Salvation Army Barton Center were treated to a party on Monday to help everyone get into the holiday spirit! The families at Barton Center (over 12 of them!) were treated to a night of food, gifts, family photos and activities, and most importantly, FUN, thanks to our friends at Royal United Mortgage.

Royal United Mortgage has been a long-time partner of School on Wheels. This year alone, they have supported us with runners and volunteers for RUN(317), a 5K race where a portion of the proceeds from each entry benefited our programs, purchased and filled 109 backpacks full of school supplies for our students AND created two videos about our programs as part of the Super Service Challenge (vote here)! The holiday party that Royal United Mortgage threw for our families is just another example of the generosity of a fantastic local company and its staff! Over 10 of their staff members volunteered the evening of the holiday party, three of which are weekly School on Wheels tutors!

To kick off the evening, Barton Center families were treated to a tasty and festive Christmas dinner from City Barbeque, with cupcakes for dessert. Throughout dinner, two Salvation Army Barton Center tutors, Trudy and Audrey Paige, serenaded the volunteers and staff with holiday music on the piano and guitar.

After dinner, the volunteers from Royal United provided many fun activities for students and their families to participate in, including cookie decorating, a spot for family photos (which were printed on site and families were able to take home with them), and decorating a picture frame to give as a gift on Christmas!

The night ended with lots of happy kids carrying a bag full of gifts for them to open with their families!

Our kids had a great time at the Barton Center holiday party – and so did the Royal United Mortgage volunteers! One volunteer, Alex Grundy, shared his thoughts about the evening, “Working to bring smiles to the children and their families was more fulfilling than anything else. It was a blessing to be a part of it, I only wish I could have done more. I was inspired by the resilient heart and minds of the kids.”

The holiday party at Salvation Army Barton Center was so much fun for the families in our program! We are so grateful for Royal United Mortgage for throwing this fantastic party to help us celebrate the holidays!
