September 4, 2001 is when our story began and during the 15 years since that date, our programs have grown in size and impact. No longer are we just an after-school homework club. Now we use well over 400 volunteers at 13 partner sites across the city to provide one-on-one tutoring up to four times each week to school-aged children experiencing homelessness! We do this in addition to working with the parents and teachers of the children in our program to make sure we’re addressing all factors impacting their education.

As we enter our 15th school year of tutoring, we’re changing up our staffing structure to ensure we are able to further expand the impact of all of our programs.

Erin and Karen

To better support the kids we serve, Director of Programs, Karen Routt, and Program Manager, Erin Brown, are shifting their roles to become Education Director and Education Manager, respectively. This means both Karen and Erin will be more closely connected to the needs of the children we serve day-to-day. Each position will create intervention plans and help navigate challenges for School on Wheels students who are identified by their site Program Coordinator as needing support beyond tutoring to meet their academic needs.

But those aren’t the only changes this year! We’re also excited about the shift in other staff members’ roles. After three amazing years as Volunteer Coordinator, Samantha Breeling, is now our Volunteer Manager! Samantha’s work in continuing to grow and sustain the volunteer program will be supported by Kris Hurst, who has transitioned into a new role as the Volunteer and Arts Coordinator. Along with supporting the recruitment, onboarding and training of volunteers, Kris will also continue to integrate arts and creativity into our one-of-a-kind curriculum.

Laura and Shalyn

Shalyn Getz is now the Communications Manager and will be expanding her communications responsibilities and managing the SPOKES committee as well as enriching opportunities for our children and volunteers through workshops and technology applications. Laura Long, hired in early 2016 is moving to full-time as our awesome Project Manager, and whipping our office into ship shape – as well as supporting critical development work that helps keep our programs running!

Along with all the staff changes, we are hiring a few new Program Coordinators who will be joining our current Program Coordinators this fall. We’re thrilled about these new hires and can’t wait to introduce you to each of them when tutoring begins again!
