3 Ways to Support School on Wheels in October

3 ways october blog

It’s officially fall! The leaves are changing, the weather is getting cool and students are on break. Fall is typically one of our busiest times here at School on Wheels (though I can’t really think of a time when we’re not busy), and this October is no exception! We have lots of great events going on this month – be sure to check them out below. We’d love your support!

vote1. Wednesday, October 19: Chalk the Vote Education Panel

Election Day is just around on the corner on Tuesday, November 8. We’ve heard both local and national candidates talk about a lot of issues this year, but there are issues such as education, poverty and homelessness we want to better understand. If you’ve ever wanted to learn more about the educational issues that affect children in our community, now’s your chance!

Join us for our 3rd annual Education Panel, Chalk the Vote: How Your Vote Impacts Education on Wednesday, October 19 at Clowes Memorial Hall, Butler University. Panelists with diverse expertise will shed light on the educational policies that will be impacted by both local and national elections, and in turn, how those policies impact our city’s most vulnerable youth — those experiencing homelessness or living in poverty. Our community outreach and advocacy group, SPOKES, is presenting this free education panel event, in partnership with Butler University and Clowes Memorial Hall. Learn more about our panelists and RSVP today.

heartland 20162. October 20-30: Heartland Film Festival

Heartland Film Festival, Indiana’s largest and longest-running film festival, will celebrate its 25th anniversary October 20-30 with an 11-day celebration that will feature more than 130 independent films, 120 visiting filmmakers and 250 film screenings. School on Wheels is very excited to be partnering with Heartland’s $2Back campaign for the fourth year in a row. When you purchase tickets to any Heartland film, use the code INDYSOW16 and we get $2 back to support our mission. Check out the full line-up today!

3. Sunday, October 30: Night Watch Meet-up

Join School on Wheels at Heartland Film Festival for a screening of the documentary film Night School on Sunday, October 30. Night School follows adult learners Greg, Melissa and Shynika, students at the Excel Center, an Indianapolis public charter school run by Goodwill Industries that provides adults with the opportunity to earn a high school diploma, as they navigate the challenges of daily life and pursue their diplomas.

We will be meeting in the lobby of AMC Castleton Square 14 at 3:00pm to go in together to get seats – the film starts at 3:15pm. Tickets are $9 and may be purchased online at Heartland Film Festival’s website. Don’t forget to enter the promo code INDYSOW16 at checkout so we receive $2 back! Learn more about the meet-up and RSVP here.

Note: Heartland does not give ratings, but they do note that the film contains strong language, some drug/alcohol use and some violent content.

While October may seem like a busy month, we have even more coming up in November! Make sure to sign up for our monthly newsletter, Chalk Talk, to get all of the details!

Advocate and Engage

Why is School on Wheels important to you? What role has education played in your life? When you tell your story and share your connection to School on Wheels, you can help your friends, family, and co-workers understand the complexities of family homelessness and give them the tools to be part of the solution, too.

Help us bring attention to the critical issue of family homelessness and help others learn how education can break the cycle of poverty and homelessness. We offer information and insight on our social platforms so be sure to follow along and engage with us online or offline.

Connect with us on social to help raise awareness and support for #SharetheLoveIndy and School on Wheels!

Donate

Every dollar makes a difference. A gift that’s meaningful to you is meaningful to us and positively impacts our programs.

A one time $10 donation provides a week’s worth of incentive prizes at one site for kiddos who accomplish milestones. A monthly recurring donation of $10 adds up to provide a month’s worth of tutoring for one child, plus a week’s worth of after school snacks at one site!

Make a one time or recurring donation that’s right for you online or check out other ways to give to School on Wheels here.

Would you rather send a check or give over the phone? Contact Amber Ewing, VP of Development, at amber@indysow.org or 317.202.9100.

Create a Facebook Fundraiser

Anyone can set up a #SharetheLoveIndy Facebook fundraiser for School on Wheels! It’s more involved than adding a donate button to a post, but it’s still simple and is so much more impactful. Click the video above to learn how to create a Facebook fundraiser on your desktop or follow the steps below to get started!

  1. Open Facebook and select Fundraisers from the column to the left of your newsfeed.
  2. Click “Raise Money”
  3. Now choose “School on Wheels Indianapolis” from the non profit category.
  4. Choose how much you want to raise and when you want your fundraiser to end.
  5. Now you get to name your fundraiser and tell your story! Share why you chose the goal you did and why you care about School on Wheels. People give to people and your story will motivate your friends to support your goal.
  6. Finally, select the School on Wheels photo you want as your cover photo, click create and you’re ready to go.

Our video above will walk you through all the steps. If you need help crafting your message or creating your fundraiser, contact Claire Brosman at claire@indysow.org or 317.202.9100. Good luck!
