Volunteers make the world go ‘round and they are a critical component of School on Wheels’ operating model. Our volunteer base, made up of over 400 people, helps us meet the needs of over 350 children impacted by homelessness across our city each school year.
Both individual tutors and tutoring teams help us achieve our goals. While many of our tutoring teams are comprised of corporate volunteers, the women volunteers of Junior League make up two of the tutoring teams that support our partner Julian Center. In addition to providing weekly tutoring support, Junior League provide generous funding for Tutors in Action. As yesterday was National Women’s Day, it only makes sense to honor the wonderful contributions of Junior League and their volunteers who help us make an impact on our community.
The Junior League of Indianapolis is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable. Junior League has provided tutoring support to School on Wheels since 2011 and has been providing financial support since 2005. Over the past 12 years, Junior League has continued to increase its support each year, and today is a key funder of our transformational tutoring program.
Junior League members Sarah Holtrup and Terra Seidel sat down for an informal chat with the staff at School on Wheels in January to talk about why they are involved in tutoring.
In addition to Junior League’s financial and tutoring support, they are always identifying new ways to help out when we need a hand throughout the year! Recently, on National Reading Day, when School on Wheels received a huge shipment of books from RTV6 in partnership with the Scripps Howard Foundation, Junior League volunteers were there to help! We’re excited for their help again on April 27 during a community volunteer day where they will be helping us level books in our library.
Junior League’s financial and volunteer support is key to School on Wheels’ success. Thank you to Junior League and all their amazing women members who make our programming possible!
