Our volunteers fulfill many roles for our organization. Tutoring our students is how the majority of our volunteers spend their time, but we also have individuals who help in our office, serve on specific committees, and help with special events. Each volunteer who gives his or her time to support our mission makes a huge impact by using key strengths and talents. This month, I would like to spotlight one of our volunteers, Kayla Nymeyer, who supports our mission in a variety of ways.

Kayla began tutoring at the Barton Center in August of 2015. For the last two years, she has also been a member of SPOKES, our young professional advocacy group, and has served on the Auction Committee for our annual fundraiser, the Education Celebration. Kayla is making a huge difference in many areas of our organization.

During tutoring, Kayla is a consistent and positive presence for our kids. The Barton Center is a long-term facility where our tutors have the chance to make a true connection with the same kids week after week. Kayla is caring yet firm with the kids and they know she has high expectations of them.

In her role as a SPOKES member, Kayla does a little bit of everything. She makes sure we are ready to start the school year with the appropriate number of tutors by helping our volunteer management staff with recruitment. She is also in charge of the group’s yearly school supply drive. Kayla is the main contact person for companies throughout the drive, communicating with and setting up businesses with information regarding what our students need for school. The start of the school year is when the most backpacks filled with school supplies and uniforms are distributed to our students; this drive is so important to ensure our kids are ready for school.

On our auction committee, Kayla is in charge of securing auction items that help us raise money at our annual fundraiser that will directly benefit our programs. The auction committee also helps put the auction packages together and helps with night of event logistics.

We are so lucky to have Kayla as part of our School on Wheels family. She makes such a difference on our kids and our organization as a whole.

We love our volunteers, and we’re super excited to that Volunteer Appreciation Week starts on Monday! If you want to celebrate by learning more about the fantastic work our volunteers do, check out our other spotlight blogs!
