Last Thursday, we celebrated one of our very favorite evenings of the year: the RUN(317) Broad Ripple 5K! We were thrilled to be the charity partner of the race for the third year in a row. It was such a fun evening, and we were excited to see so many familiar faces and meet some new friends!
Even though the weather was hot and humid, the event was a complete sell-out with 1,800 registered runners. We had a fantastic time meeting the runners/walkers and the people who came to cheer them on at our booth. Some already knew about School on Wheels, but lots of people stopped by to learn more about our mission and spin our prize wheel – and won some awesome sunburst swag in the process! This year, we featured some of our old favorites including temporary tattoos and drawstring bags, and added some of our new School on Wheels baseball caps to the mix!
Speaking of swag, every runner who completed the race also received a very cool medal that doubled as a bottle opener. After the race, everyone stuck around for the after party featuring live music by DJ Sinclair Wheeler and beer from Thr3e Wisemen.
The success of the race would not have been possible without the support of the local community. This year, we had to find nearly 100 volunteers to make the race happen – 20 more than last year! A special thank you to some of the groups who came out to support us:
Royal United Mortgage for encouraging their employees to run or volunteer for the race
Kendra Scott employees for coming out and volunteering with us for the first time
Girl Scouts of Central Indiana Troop 615 for working the water station and providing much-needed refreshments to runners during the hot and humid race
Junior League of Indianapolis for providing a group of volunteers to help course marshal
Shalom Zone for continuing their support of our programs by volunteering for race for the second year in a row
The wonderful ladies from Marigold Clothing for holding a give-back day at the store the day of the race and also creating a Marigal team to participate in the 5K
All of our wonderful tutors, board members, and SPOKES community outreach group members who ran, walked, or gave their time to make the race possible
We also want to thank all the businesses and neighbors in Broad Ripple who helped support this event by accommodating the crowds that came with the race. We so appreciate Broad Ripple Village opening up your community so that RUN(317) could host a great event that also helps with a great cause – helping us break the cycle of homelessness through education!
If you missed it, check out our storify for a retelling of the event through social media, and make sure to check out our album on Facebook for all of the photos from the evening. There’s still time to sign up to participate in the last three races of the series that will support Energy Krazed (Mass Ave), Kids’ Voice of Indiana (Carmel Art District) and Keep Indianapolis Beautiful (Fountain Square)!
