Did you know that we added a new site partner this school year? We are so excited to now be tutoring at a fifth elementary school! We are at Cold Spring School on Mondays and Wednesdays. The stories of impact that have come out of Cold Spring already are so encouraging, and we couldn’t be more thankful for the tutors who are helping us make a difference with this new group of kiddos.
Cold Spring is already running so smoothly in so many aspects, but Amy Gardner, the Program Coordinator for Cold Spring, says that the relationships that have developed with the students are what stand out most. According to Amy, “We have some kiddos in tutoring that are coming from some difficult situations. Since School on Wheels is new to Cold Spring, the students didn’t know us and didn’t know why we were coming. We see them the last hour of their day and had some logistic kinks to work out. Navigating so many new factors at once isn’t always a recipe for success.
However, as the students see us come back week after week and develop relationships with their tutors, they now feel safe when they are with us, and they don’t walk in with as much “attitude.” The walls are coming down and the students are realizing we are there to help them. We are building trust and safety which opens up opportunities for learning.”
One learning opportunity that’s a big hit? Circuit boards. “I think sometimes they tell us they don’t have homework just so they can play with the circuit board,” Amy says with a smile.
We are so thankful to be working with the incredible administration at Cold Spring. The staff has bent over backwards to make School on Wheels staff and tutors feel welcomed, which has created a very calm and safe atmosphere for the kids. One of the most memorable parts about Cold Spring? There are goats and chickens on the property! Amy joked that, “You can’t have a bad day there knowing you can go see goats and chickens!”
We have so many amazing tutors, and they are truly what has made Cold Spring so special so quickly. Amy says, “Our tutors are amazing. Just simply amazing. They have been so patient to wait for the relationships to grow and develop. We have one tutor who was just filling in at Cold Spring until we could build up our tutor numbers at that site. Her “filling in” has turned into coming twice a week because she has developed such a strong connection with her student. She doesn’t want to leave! Another tutor is reading a book his student likes, just so they can discuss it when they are together. One of our male tutors brings his own iPad to be able to teach his student chess. We have several college students with busy schedules who are there every week. I could go on and on with examples of how they are going the extra mile. It’s been a gift to watch them interact with the students.”
We couldn’t be more thankful to have such an amazing new partner in Cold Spring or for the hard work that Amy and her team of tutors are putting in there. We truly cannot wait to continue to see the impact they are going to have on so many students this school year and beyond.
