We succeed only if our kids and their families achieve goals and we’re thrilled to say we are feeling very successful as we look back at 2017/2018 and forward to the 2018/2019 school year! Every part of our program is designed to help the children and families we serve meet critical educational milestones and prepare them for future academic success.
Children impacted by homelessness are at a much higher risk of dropping out without intervention. In fact, over 40% of formerly homeless youth dropped out of school or stopped attending school while they were homeless in middle or high school. This is why we track stats that aren’t just grade data and numbers of children served. We look at the whole picture to make sure we have invested parents, dedicated and well-trained volunteers and staff, and happy children who are maintaining or improving skills during one of the most traumatic times in their lives.
Last year hundreds volunteers provided thousands hours of tutoring to children impacted by homelessness. Our staff connected deeply with the parents of the children we serve to offer education-based case management support to help overcome transportation obstacles, help families enroll their children in schools that better met their needs, and got younger siblings prepared for early success by helping with Pre-K enrollment. Our wrap around educational services helped build a stable foundation for future educational success and paved the way for some exciting program growth that we’re excited to tell you about next month!
When we break down the numbers, here’s what the 2017/2018 school year looked like at School on Wheels.
• Provided free programming at 15 partner sites
• Engaged 512 students and parents with wraparound educational support and tutoring
• Empowered 444 volunteer tutors with the resources necessary to help children read at grade level, complete homework, improve skills across all subject areas, and encourage a love of learning.
• Trained volunteers contributed 5608 hours of tutoring support
What does that mean for the kids?
Of students who were able to engage with School on Wheels for at least 30 tutoring sessions, 98% were promoted to the next grade!
100% of families that participated in our Pre-K readiness pilot were referred to a high quality early learning program and began receiving critical developmental services.
100% of families we worked with through the school enrollment process were matched with a school of their choice!
Why are these achievements important?
Children who attend Pre-K, on average, score higher on tests and have improved language development and motor skills by the time they enter kindergarten. Children who enter school ready to learn are more likely than their peers to experience academic success throughout their education, attain higher levels of education, and secure employment.
Consistent grade promotion is a critical factor in student achievement and graduation from high school. Studies demonstrate that students who were held back are between 20% and 50% more likely to drop out of school.
We aren’t the only ones who are excited about our programs. Of parents surveyed about our workshops, 100% indicated they learned important information that will help their child and 96% of parents noted an improvement in the quality of their child’s work.
Thanks to the partners, parents, teachers, and volunteers who helped make last school year such a success. Our programs are growing so stay tuned for more information about how we continue to go beyond tutoring!
