“Each and every child has a super power. With your help, we work to ensure the homeless children in our city are visible so that they may share their gifts with the world and break the cycle of homelessness.”

Sally Bindley, School on Wheels Founder & CEO, spoke these words at the close of School on Wheels’ Education Celebration on April 18, 2019. Each year, the Education Celebration raises funds and awareness for the educational programs that transform lives, while honoring the people and businesses that make School on Wheels’ mission possible.

The numbers are in, and this year’s Education Celebration was a record-breaking success! Our event sponsors and attendees helped us celebrate all of the wonderful academic achievements of students enrolled in our programs and helped us raise just over $270,000 through sponsorships, ticket sales, auction packages, our Moment to Give, and a generous challenge match by E&A Companies.
Special Guest Speaker, Dr. Matthew Morton, emcee Brad Brown of RTV6, and surprise guest Scot Pollard helped carry an evening full of information and inspiration.  We also were able to honor five individuals and corporations who have made a huge impact in the lives of School on Wheels’ kids and the greater Indianapolis community.

2019 Corporate Partner of the Year: TCC

TCC is a wraparound corporate partner dedicated to making a difference. TCC along with TCC Gives, have supported School on Wheels for the past five years. This year, 16 TCC staff members dedicate their time as volunteer tutors at Coburn Place Safe Haven and Dayspring Center to help our programs thrive.

2019 Tutoring Team of the Year: RSM US LLP

RSM began tutoring at Greenbriar Elementary School last year and soon demonstrated they were all in for our kids. They have eight tutors who show up regularly, keep us supplied with incentive prizes, and RSM even matches their teams volunteer hours with monetary support for our programs.

2019 Tutor of the Year: Rock Alberts

Over the nine years Rock has been a tutor, he’s shared his talents at multiple sites. And he doesn’t just show up to tutor – he brings a true love of learning and handson projects to supplement the tutoring hour. The kids appreciate Rock bringing lessons to life, and we do too.

2019 Education Champion: Brian Sawa

Brian Sawa, the School Counselor at Washington Woods Elementary, is responsible for coordinating programs to ensure the social-emotional health of the students. Brian also oversees school-wide initiatives such as Leader In Me, clothing & food drives, and connections with community partners. Along with his honor, Brian’s school will receive a $1,000 cash award that will benefit the youth with whom he works.

2019 Philanthropists of the Year: Glick Philanthropies

Glick Philanthropies has supported School on Wheels since 2012 and has provided funding for projects that have been transformational for the organization. From making parent outreach and education a reality to helping us expand more deeply into key Indianapolis schools, Glick Philanthropies has set School on Wheels on the path that will take the organization into the future.

Thanks to each of our 27 sponsors who supported this event and School on Wheels’ programs.
