As Thanksgiving approaches, we want to take a moment to pause and reflect on how grateful we at School on Wheels are for every single one of you. This year has been anything but typical and we know how hard it’s been for the students and families we serve, our partners, our staff, and so many of you. Thank you for continuing to support our mission as we work hard to keep our programs going to serve even more students and families impacted by homelessness around Indianapolis. Today we’re kicking off the holiday season by sharing what we’re grateful for this year, starting with:

You! Whether you’re a community supporter, volunteer, partner site, donor, or corporate partner, your support keeps us going. Thank you for helping us break the cycle of homelessness through education. Together, we’re making an impact in the lives of children and families impacted by homelessness all across the city.

Our volunteers are critical to our mission of providing tutoring and academic support services to school-aged children impacted by homelessness. Despite having to pause in-person volunteer opportunities during the Fall 2020 semester due to Covid-19, restrictions, so many of our tutors, office volunteers, board members, and committee members have continued to support our students, programs, and office from afar. From engaging in virtual tutoring opportunities to spreading the word about our programs and needs to staying connected to us through social media and e-newsletters, we can’t thank them enough for committing their passion, skills, and time to School on Wheels.

Our community partners help us transform lives. We’re thankful for the opportunity to work alongside 20 school and shelter partner sites to help equip children and their families with the tools necessary to achieve academic success. Our partnership with each of these locations allows us to meet the educational needs of hundreds of students and families experiencing homelessness each year.

Our donors and corporate partners make great things possible every single day. We’re fortunate that our community is full of folks who recognize the importance of education and choose to invest in the futures of our city’s most vulnerable children. Every dollar helps us make a difference. Thank you to the generous organizations, businesses, foundations, and individuals that have provided essential funding for our programs! In addition, thank you to our corporate partner tutoring teams for continuing to support us this year by hosting donation drives and maintaining sponsorships to help keep our programs going.

The students and families we serve are the reason we do what we do. Homelessness is difficult to comprehend for those who haven’t experienced it, but it impacts so many families in our community. There is no one reason for homelessness and it can have lasting impacts on every family member. So many of our students experience stress and trauma due to the instability in their lives. Despite that, our kiddos have some of the sweetest hearts full of kindness and love. We’re thankful for our students who can always brighten our day and for their families who work so hard to build the brightest futures for their children.
