“The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate action of its members.” – Coretta Scott King
For the past 17 years, The Junior League of Indianapolis has been a staunch supporter of School on Wheels’ kids and programs. From providing generous funding that has helped us continue to meet unhoused students where they are academically to providing tutoring and general volunteer support, we know we can count on The Junior League of Indianapolis to help us address the needs of unhoused students and their families in many different capacities.
This year, their financial support was more critical than ever. The COVID-19 pandemic forced schools across Indiana to adopt remote learning for long periods of time, which presented a number of challenges, including exacerbating existing inequalities in education and widening the achievement gap for students impacted by homelessness.
Thanks to a generous $20,475 Community Assistance Grant award from The Junior League of Indianapolis, we didn’t miss a beat and continued providing out tutoring and academic support services to our students to prevent them from falling even further behind. Because of this support, we were able to stay connected and engaged with our students despite not being able to utilize the support of our full volunteer base.
In a normal year, our 400+ community volunteers helped us provide over 6,000 hours of academic support. Because of COVID-19 site restrictions, that number was cut to just 70 volunteers that were retrained to help with virtual tutoring.
Our staff jumped in to fill this gap and drove hundreds of miles delivering educational resources and food to students and families throughout Indianapolis, logged thousands of hours in Zoom tutoring sessions, created learning pods to serve new students in response to schools adopting remote learning, and created other new ways to keep unhoused students on track academically.
This wouldn’t have been possible without the generous support organizations like The Junior League of Indianapolis provided this year. We’re thankful that The Junior League of Indianapolis is full of compassionate individuals that are dedicated to helping us continue to make critical connections happen as we break the cycle of homelessness in Indianapolis together.
