Help Students Succeed in School
Devon and his siblings moved six times in just one school year and the frequency of their moves made it challenging for new transportation to be arranged each time. Our team recognized that with all the other changes in their lives, keeping them at the same school would be critical to their success. Working with the school and each new guardian caring for Devon and his siblings, our staff ensured that all the children had consistent transportation and were able to remain together in the same school for the entirety of the school year.
Devon and each of his siblings were promoted to the next grade and were able to maintain and improve their grades during one of the most turbulent years in their young lives, thanks to the support and intervention from School on Wheels.
Homelessness can happen at any point in a child’s life and without the right intervention, children can rapidly fall behind their housed peers academically. Frequent moves and disruptions among students experiencing homelessness leads to higher truancy rates. During an average school year, approximately 40% of students experiencing homelessness attend two or more schools. With every move, it takes four to six months to catch up academically.
This school year, School on Wheels is expanding into a sixteenth partner location so we can serve more children just like Devon. As we expand to meet the academic needs of more homeless children in our city, we need your help. Will you give a gift today to help us transform the lives of more children like Devon through education?
