Individuals who volunteer with the Education Celebration Auction Committee will help secure items and experiences to for our annual auction that raises funds for our tutoring and education-based case management services. Contact Shannon Cochran for more information at shannon@indysow.org.

Become a Tutor

Our volunteer tutors provide focused support to school-aged children experiencing homelessness schools and shelters throughout Indianapolis. Volunteer opportunities are Monday through Thursday each week with time slots throughout the day and during the evening. Due to COVID-19 our Fall 2020 volunteer opportunities are limited at this time. We are still accepting applications, but please understand there may be a delay to training and participation due to the effort of School on Wheels and our partners to keep our kids and volunteers safe.

Office Projects

We often need help during the week, stuffing backpacks, organizing supplies, help with mailings, and preparing tutoring resources or other special projects. If you would like to volunteer as an individual or with a group, please fill out our volunteer form. Due to COVID, group opportunities are limited and we are unable to accommodate large groups in the office.

Create an Educational Video

We’re inviting volunteers and educators to engage with students and share your talents and expertise through recorded videos. This provides the perfect opportunity for students to access these tutorials at their own pace, supplement their school work with productive virtual engagement, and even see the faces of some of their favorite tutors!

Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • Teach a card game that practices math
  • Lead a creative writing lesson
  • Demonstrate an arts and craft project that can be accomplished with basic supplies and materials found outside
  • Show how to write and address a letter to a friend
  • Lead a child-friendly yoga routine
  • Tell a story or read a book out loud in English or Spanish and present questions for comprehension
  • Show how to create your own board game with basic supplies

Basic guidelines and things to remember:

  • Videos should be no longer than 10 minutes in length. You may record using your phone, laptop, or camera. Please find a spot to record with stable lighting and low background noise.
  • Please introduce yourself by sharing your first name and where you tutor.
  • Feel free to share a brief message of support or motivation, but refrain from mentioning the names of students or personal detail.
  • These videos will be available to all School on Wheels students, not just specific sites.
  • All videos will be reviewed by the volunteer team before being shared with our students.
  • Contact Fatima Johnson, Volunteer and Community Engagement Manager, for the link to upload your video at fatima@indysow.org.
